Ruth Wein’s mother made a profound death-bed request of her – to continue lighting the Shabbat candles. The request left her in awe at the sacred significance of lighting the Shabbat candles as well as the legacy her mother had left her. Ruth marvelled at the way this tradition had travelled from country to country, from generation to generation, from community to community, and was still relevant today. She was drawn to explore this further, and to this end, invited a selection of members from the local Jewish community, from varying backgrounds, to participate in sharing their experiences of the Shabbat candle-lighting tradition.
The resulting exhibition is Ruth’s representation of the participants’ responses to the Shabbat candle-lighting ritual.

‘SPIRIT’
By
Ben, Elli and Robyn Bardas.
The exhibition is open for viewing on Wednesdays and Sundays from 11am-4pm
From June 29 until July 24
Siblings Ben, Elli and Robyn Bardas each work independently within the scope of Spirit as subject. Sometimes landscape based, the 2D works here explore spirit as place, land, and history. Spirit in these praxes may be the space in meditation, the spirit of a specific place, the sense of something or someone that was. Spirit may be experienced as energy or a non-physical presence. It may be felt in the body, or out-of-body. It may be minute or epic in scale. Spirit here is both personal and omni, specific and sublime.

Answer to Job by Yuval Rosinger
Opening event Wednesday April 27th at SAS, 6-9pm
The exhibition is open for viewing on Wednesdays and Sundays from 11am-4pm
until May 29th
Answer to Job is an exhibition that gesturally weaves together some of the many loose threads presented in the Book of Job. In a dream-like state, an unspecified narrator meanders neurotically about Job’s role in the canon of patriarchs, the problem of Evil, some of the complications with divine totality, and the arcane nature of free will. Join us as we reimagine the epic drama of Job through the eyes of a bystander struck by the divine beauty that dwells in man. Haphazard, emaciated, barely alive; Answer to Job is an introspective celebration of the stoic style of the martyr.

“This body of work is ink on paper. The work allows for a creative interpretation of Aleph, the first letter of the Jewish alphabet. As I worked on this series, I have pondered on how letters and words evolve through time, no matter the language.”
