East Melbourne Synagogue Restoration and Expansion

The Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Learning Centre

We have a vision for a new type of Bet Midrash offering an open, engaging and authentic Jewish learning experience for people of all backgrounds, and from far and wide.

This will be a vibrant ecosystem of Jewish literature, thought, discussion, debate, and learning. Chumash, Mishnah, Talmud, writings from the middle ages, Jewish legal codes, Philosophical and ethical works, Halachic responsa, Modern writings, history, culture and theology; We see all areas of Judaism being learned and taught.

The array of learning opportunities on offer will engage, educate, and inspire all kinds of minds in a dynamic Jewish learning experience. Individuals and partners, men and women, small groups and larger groups, English and Hebrew (even a bit of Yiddish), ‘frum’ and ‘secular’ all learning together. They will be supported by a careful selection of Melbourne’s leading pedagogists and Torah teachers. All happening in a purposefully re-designed learning space and Library of Judaica.

The Bet Midrash will be dedicated to the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and will be established in tribute to his life’s work; the only learning centre of its kind in Australia dedicated in Rabbi Sack’s memory. It will take pride of place in the landscape of great institutions of Torah learning that have sustained the Jewish people through our long and storied history.
