Dear Members and Friends,

I am writing to report to you on last month's Annual General Meeting and recent developments at East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation.

The Annual General Meeting for the 150th year of East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation was held on Sunday, 2nd December, 2007. I was honoured to be re-elected to the presidency. Elizabeth Alexander, Jonathan Finkelstein, Michael Jacobs, Judith Rothberg and Lloyd Samuel were declared elected. I thank them, together with continuing Board members Alan and Vivien Davis, Ernest Finkelstein, Helena Grunfeld and Michael Schwarz and Mark Lazarus (ex-officio), for their commitment and service to the shul. At the Annual General Meeting, a motion was put to endorse the Board of Management's recommendation to appoint Rabbi Dovid Gutnick as Chief Minister of the Congregation.

I am delighted to report that the motion was approved. On your behalf, I welcome Rabbi Gutnick, his wife Rachel and their sons Schneer Chaim and Menachem Mendel. Rabbi and Mrs Gutnick organised a very successful Chanukah evening on the first nightof Chanukah, with a wonderful attendance and audience participation, all put together at very short notice. They also hosted a Shabbat dinner for overseas students living in the Carlton, CBD and East Melbourne area, with the assistance of generous sponsors.

With the new appointment of Rabbi Gutnick as a full time Rabbi, we have already had a hype of new activity, new members and a new excitement is in the air. We would like to encourage your initiatives, ideas and involvement in any area of the shul's activities.  Rabbi Gutnick has proposed a number of initiatives and ongoing programmes, which will be detailed in the February newsletter. Rabbi Gutnick is available throughout the holidays at 0430-384-948.

The EMHC office will reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, 29th January. Services will continue throughout the holidays on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. and Shabbat mornings at 9.30 a.m.

Yours sincerely,

Danny Segal

President
