REQUIRED WORKS
On 20 March 1877, the shule's committee laid a foundation stone at Albert Street. To the east, St. Patrick's cathedral was rising, and the newly completed Parliament House stood to the South. The new synagogue was to occupy pride of place atop Melbourne's Eastern Hill. Using Crouch and Wilson, the city's preeminent architects guaranteed a solid edifice for generations to come. Today, 125 years later, time has taken its toll on our beautiful heritage-listed building. The roof, in particular, needs urgent work to protect the building's valuable contents. Security, comfort and access for worshippers needs to be updated. The first steps have been taken with the commissioning of a heritage architectural study conducted by Allom Lovell and Associates, which has highlighted areas in urgent need of attention.
Our 125th anniversary is a great occasion to be celebrated, and to remind Melbourne's Jewish community of the need to build on and protect our heritage. We need to rebuild and redevelop. We have set our fund-raising target for this Jubilee Year of $3.4 Million. To achieve this, we need your help. Anyone standing in Albert Street, looking at the shule, can see how time has ravaged the structure of the building. The Heritage report sets a framework for the restoration and appropriate enhancement of the building. This report is available for viewing on request. The estimated amount of this renovation work is $1.8 million. The shule's surrounds show similar signs of ageing. The Rabbi's quarters, built just after WW2, are in dire need of updating. Congregants must walk through the weather to the toilet block, which itself is firmly set in the Victorian era. Converting an existing space on the site for our educational resource centre will not be cheap, but will form part of the recovery strategy of the shule. A new kitchen and updates to the Hall will similarly bolster the shule's ability to self-fund in the future. The cost of these works is estimated at $1.6 million.
